Sight Words
These are a list of words studied throughout the year. These words are primarily words
that cannot be "sounded out". They are called "sight words" because we recognize them by sight!
Your child may also refer to them as "word wall words". We have a "Word Wall" in our
classroom where we are constantly adding to our list of words we are learning or already know.
At the beginning of the year, we slowly add everyone's name to the "Word Wall" under the correct
letter. This helps children become more familiar with the letters.
Word Families
These are groups of words that rhyme AND end with the same spelling.
These words help us learn to decode the words we read. We sometimes call this "finding the chunks" or "finding a
word inside a word".
We will look at some of these word families at the beginning
of the year, especially with the introduction to rhyming. After the winter break, we will really focus on these
families.
Number Stories
Number stories are just old fashion word problems. We use
stories to introduce addition and subtraction.
FOR EXAMPLE: "Kellie has 2 M&Ms and Paul has 3 M&Ms. How many do
they have all together?"
We use pictures of M&Ms (or whatever the item may be) to show how many each person has.
Then we count all of the M&Ms to come up with the answer!
Number Sentences
These are just the way we write the algorithm for number stories (or word problems). The sentence
include numbers and operators (plus, minus, and equal signs).
FOR EXAMPLE: We would write the number sentence for the above example as follows:
2 + 3 = 5
