Daily Things to Do
There are only three main things we ask you to do each day:
- Check your child's folder everyday - remove any completed work and sign
& return any necessary paperwork.
- Send your child to school prepared - Your child needs to have his/her
folder everyday. He/she also needs to turn in their homework notebook every Thursday at the beginning
of class to receive a sticker and a treat for doing their best on their homework.
- Dress Your Child Appropriately - We will go outside
everyday (unless it is raining). All children need to wear appropriate shoes for running, climbing, etc.
Flip flops are not safe for them to play on the playground equipment. During the hotter months, we use the air conditioning
in the room. It can be cold in the room at times. You may send a sweater/sweatshirt with your child so
that they may be comfortable during class.
Transportation
It is VERY important for us to get your child home safely. As a result, we
will send your child home the same way everyday. If you need to change the way your child will be going home, you
may do one of two things:
- send a note with your child in his/her folder
- call the office before dismissal time
Please include the date of the change and the mode of transportation ("Grandma will be picking her up today.")
Working With Your Child At Home
1. Handwriting - We are now using the D'Neilian form of handwriting.
It looks like cursive without the letters connecting. We sent home a copy of the alphabet written in this format.
If you need a new one, please let me know.
2. Writing On Lined Paper - We do not begin writing on
lined paper until after the winter break. You will see that your child may bring home work on lined paper from time-to-time;
however, this is not practiced consistantly until later in the year. We want to expose them to using the lines, but
we do not require it yet. We want the children to get used to forming the letters right now!
3. Sounding Out Words - In kindergarten the children
are learning the letters while learning how to apply them to their writing. As a result, some children may not be able
to "hear the right letters" until later in kindergarten. Here is the typical flow of learning throughout kindergarten:
- Using only the beginning sound for the entire word (d = dog)
- Using the beginning and ending sounds only (dg = dog)
- Using all the letter but with an incorrect vowel (dug = dog)
- Using all the correct letters (dog =dog)
Later in their learning, children will begin to build larger words as they learn more of the grammatical rules.
This is not attempted in kindergarten unless the child is ready to do so. However, we will expose them to blends ("bl"
as in block) and diagraphs ("sh" as in shop) and let them know they exist.
