Abacus

Everyday Mathematics

We will begin the year by learning how to count up to and recognize the numbers up to 20.

We willl sing lots of songs that talk about counting and numbers. Please count with your child often and help your child learn to recognize the numbers.

Tricky Teens - We call the numbers from 11 -19 the "tricky Tteens" because they are so tricky.  These numbers, when counting and recognizing them, are hard to learn. We tell the students that they just have to memorize them. Once they are learned, the children will be able to count almost endlessly!

Science and Social Studies

Science
We focus a lot on color words at the beginning of the years. We place color words on our word wall since they will also be sight words. We concentrate on the colors of the rainbow: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple. We also include the colors black, brown, white and pink.

With fall arriving, we are studying the seasons and changes that occur.  We have even begun learning about the plant life cycle of the pumpkin.  We will learn about many plant and animal life cycles this year.  Soon we will discuss the butterflies life cycle!

A couple of weeks ago we were introduced to a new center…Science!  When we start our study of the letter “Mm”, we will be experimenting with magnets.  We will learn a very important rule about our magnets.  We NEVER put magnets near the computer because it will break the computer.  We will continue to use our magnets safely in class and at home.

Social Studies
In the beginning of the year we are focusing on building community. This involves learning the routines, rules & consequences, and classmates names.

With the Thanksgiving holiday only weeks away, we will start discussing the traditions and history of this holiday.  We will talk about the Native Americans (Indians) and Pilgrims.  We will look at the world map to help us understand how far the Pilgrims had to travel to get to America.  We will make Indian necklaces and headbands.  We will also learn to use pictures to write just like the Native Americans did in order to tell stories!

Helpful Hints

1.  Review the numbers and counting on a regular basis so your child will become fluent with these skills.

2.  Review the rules and consequences everyday.

3.  Ask your child about what he/she did at school.

Remember...Review the rules with your child to ensure a great year!
