 Sight Words

  • new words for each week on "Homework" page
  • complete list for the year on "By the End of K" page

Your child will begin learning sight words later this grading period, around the 7th week of school.

Once we start studying these words, please review all the sight words with your child at home!  The sight words for the month will be posted on the "Homework" page in advance.

Your child will come home with each sight word on a card.  Please keep these cards to review with your child.  The recognition of the sight words is tested every report card!

Word Families
** These words are used/learned throughout the year.  They help the children learn how to decode the words they see when they are reading.  We focus on them a little in the beginning of the year and then really study them during the second part of the year.

The top word in each list is a sight word.  By changing the beginning sound or adding a new first letter, more words can be made.  These are what we call word families.  They look alike, but they are a little different.  They are just like our own families.  We look like our parents, but not exactly like them.

Sight words are words that we know by sight.  We do not usually sound these words out to read them.  Therefore, your child will be learning a lot of them "by sight."
