What Your Child Should Know By The End of Kindergarten

Language Arts

Your child should be able to:

1. randomly identify all upper and lower case

    letters

2. randomly identify the sounds of all the letters

3. identify the sight words/known words

    (see list)

4. read using beginning/ending sounds, sight  

   words and text pattern

5. write first and last name correctly

6. write using:

       a.  beginning and ending sounds

       b.  sight words

     c.  correct capitalization

       d.  correct punctuation

 

Mathematics

Your child should be able to:
  1. count by:
        a.  1s to 110+
        b.  5s to 110+
        c.  10s to 110+
        d.  2s to 20+
   2. count backwards from 20+ to 0
   3. randomly identify numbers to 110+
   4. write numbers 0 - 110+
   5. recognize shapes: circle, square, triangle,
       rectangle, oval, trapezoid, and hexagon

We hope this list will help you in preparation for this year.  We want every child to be successful.  Please remember to make all learning fun and enjoyable.  This is the beginning of their academic careers and we don't want any kindergarten burn-out!

There are several other criteria to be met in kindergarten; however, this is a list of some of the most important criteria.
